KEVIN SCHWANTZ SUZUKI SCHOOL

I arrived in Birmingham, Alabama with a frown on my face. After looking over and over the radar all weekend, it looked as if this weekend would be more wet than I’d expected. I’ve wanted to attend the KSS ever since my oldest brother Kyle took part at Road Atlanta. It was finally my first time at the school and also my first time aboard a 600cc motorcycle. I was nervous because it was much bigger than a 125, also because it was in the pouring rain. After a classroom session we all went out to ride! I talked with a few instructors over the day and started to get a better feel for the bike.

During lunch the rain came to a halt and I was glad that I could get some dry track. I ended up doing some one on one time with Blake Young, a current factory pro superbike racer. After evaluation from him I talked with Ted Cobb, and then with Michael Martin. These guys were the most fun group of people and the most professional all at the same time. After that I exchanged some tips between other riders and continued on with the classroom lessons.

Kevin helped me out the whole way, from beginning to end. But in the last session I followed him learning lines and body position, and then he followed me to assess my riding. All together it was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my racing career. I just need to say thanks to all the guys! Kevin, Blake, Ted, Mike, Harry, Lee in the classroom, and everyone else. Thanks a lot I had the time of my life!

CODY CONCLUDES HIS SEASON ABOARD HIS 125 IN GRAND CHAMPIONSHIPS

In Lexington, Ohio I raced in the AMA Sports Road Racing Grand Championships. It’s a 4-day racing weekend that will decide the national champions at the Expert ranked level. USGPRU also had a sanctioned race that they held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. After cold morning practice sessions, I qualified 8th. From the second row I battled as high as 5th, and had very close racing up until the checkers. My least favorite corner became my favorite by the end of the weekend, especially because I had dropped a second and a half racing for positions. I ended up with a respectable 9th place after heated battles during the end-stage of the race. I was pleased to have finished top ten in my first USGPRU race, but I had to keep my momentum up from Saturday.

On Sunday, I was starting from 6th on the grid, and got the best start of my life. I dropped a few positions but lost a top five finish on the last lap. I finished 6th in the RRGC 125 GP Expert race but I was proud to be battling with names that I envied earlier in the year. Talking with other riders during post-race, the majority of comments I received was how fast my bike was on the back stretch. I just told them it’s because my dad worked 24/7 to make sure I gained some horsepower, and I couldn’t thank him enough. It may be my last weekend on a 125, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead in the future! This entire weekend really couldn’t have happened without Dave from Chicken Hawk Tire Warmers. We desperately needed a front tire warmer, and he ran over there and hooked us up! Also thanks to Arai for letting me sport my brand new Corsair-V for the first time, courtesy of Bruce and Jeff from Arai. Check out the “Sponsor” page for everyone else who’s been helping me out!

YOUNGEST WYMAN BROTHER DEBUTS IN USGPRU SERIES

After a long break from racing, I followed up in one of my most anticipated races all year. It was the USGPRU 125 class for my first time, which would also be one of my first times racing with 30+ 125cc GP bikes. After the practice sessions all day Friday, I was really happy with my times compared to the USGPRU regulars, in different practice rounds comparing from 8th up to 5th place.

Saturday’s schedule consisted of two more practice rounds, a 12-minute qualifying session, a 20 minute GT race, and a club CCS 125gp race. I went out in the two morning rounds really smooth and easy just to stay fresh in the morning. In the GT, I battled with 125s, 250s, 450s, 650s, and other bikes, which was without a doubt was the most diverse race I’ve ever been in. Then in the club race, I was gridded up as 4E, and I got a good start that put me into fourth. After the first lap it became an uneventful race and I was third when the checkers flew.

My USGPRU 125 qualifying session rounded out the day, but some back luck came my way in the opening laps. My transponder flew off the bike on the first lap of the session, so I was unable to record a time. As of late Saturday evening I was last on the grid (34th place). Early Sunday morning, I was supposed to see the president of USGPRU Stewart Aitken-Cade, who I got to know pretty well. I heard rumors that he might give me a break with my qualifying situation. Stu’s a great guy and he let me take my qualifying session from the morning times that I was about to run.

On the 5th lap I entered turn 6 and lost the rear and highsided, eventually causing a mild concussion and taking away my opportunity to race for the rest of the weekend. All in all I’m thankful that I’m ok and am really looking forward to my next race at Mid-Ohio for the RRGC! I have to thank my family and all of our sponsors. Visit the sponsor page!

Two Brothers Set to Compete in AMA Pro Supersport at Mid-Ohio

Macedon, NY (July 13, 2009) – The AMA Pro Supersport grid will include not one but two of the total three Wyman Brothers of the WBR race team. Though Kyle has been competing since Daytona, Travis , 17, will make his AMA Pro Supersport debut at this weekend’s event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Travis, former member of the 2008 Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup, hopped on a 600 in the beginning of this year and is ready to take it to the pro level. “I can’t wait to get out there at Mid-Ohio. School is out now and I’ve been watching all my former team mates from last year competing in Supersport this season and am looking forward to joining my brother and them on the grid this weekend.” He will be competing on a Suzuki GSX-R600 while Kyle continues his efforts on the Yamaha YZF R6.

Cody, 15, is the youngest of the three brothers and is currently competing on a 125 at club events, but plans on entering the AMA ranks in 2010.

WBR would like to extend gratitude to its sponsors: Harv’s Harley-Davidson, Long Pond Autobody, Arai, Chicken Hawk Racing, ChromeGlow.com, Superseal Sealcoating,  Dynojet, Vortex, ODI Grips, Dunlop, Zero Gravity, Honey Stinger, and Manchester Mart.

WYMAN BROS. AT BEAVERUN

After a long break from racing, WBR got out to BeaveRun Motorsports Complex for a WERA Regional race. Located in Wampum, Pennsylvania , this 1.6 mile long course has around 60-second lap times. Following heavy showers Friday night, the Harv’s Harley-Davidson race team wasn’t prepared for a drenched race track. On Cody’s Honda RS125, the rain is a large factor to traction control. Cody ended up being absent during all practice sessions, even though he had a 20 lap solo race toward the end of the day. After lunch break, the rain died down and the sun rarely was shining. By the time the grid was set, there was a “river” flowing across turn 3, but they started the race anyways. With a decent start, Cody was 3rd going into turn 1, about half-way through the race he was sitting in 2nd and finished as the runner-up his first year as an expert. Slight showers over Saturday night were not a factor, as he ended up riding in both practices. In the two sprint races, Cody battled to finish 2nd to the former 125cc national champion, and in his other sprint, Cody came in 4th.

Cody is really looking forward to his first USGPRU (United States Grand Prix Racing Union) race that is all of the 125cc and 250cc racers in the country. On July 25-26, this race will take place in Millville, NJ at New Jersey Motorsports Park on the Lighting Course.

Thanks to all our sponsors! - Harv’s Harley-Davidson, Long Pond Autobody, Chicken Hawk Racing, Vortex, SuperSeal, Chromeglow, Honey Stinger, Arai, Bridgestone, Hotbodies, Odi Grips, and to all my personal supporters.

WBR at Virginia International Raceway

Alton, VA was the next stop for Kyle, Travis and Cody this past weekend for the first round of the WERA Sportsman Series in the northeast. With temperatures plummeting into the 20’s overnight it was a rather cool, but dry, race weekend for the three brothers. Kyle, searching for some quality track time before the next AMA national at Road Atlanta, went to VIR with a relaxed state of mind while the younger of the two went to keep shaking off some of the winter cobwebs. Travis, 2008 Red Bull Rookie, spent this weekend on only his second outing on his GSX-R600 while Cody continued his progress on the RS125 machines. The cold nights offered a frigid track for the morning practice sessions which took until after lunch time to get up to comfortable temperature. Saturday brought the 16-lap solo races to the schedule where Kyle and Travis competed on their 600cc machines in the Mediumweight Expert class. Gridded up in the rear of the pack, Kyle was able to reach 6th place and Travis was able to reach 21st before a red flag due to a large accident brought the race to an end after only 3 laps.

Sunday’s schedule called for a number of 6 lap sprint races on a slightly warmer day. Kyle competed in the B Superbike and C Superstock Expert races aboard his YZF-R6 and came away with an 8th place finish after starting on row 21 of the second wave in B Superbike. The C Superstock Expert race included Kyle and Travis together as they came away with 6th and 22nd place finishes, respectively. Cody had a tough break in the 125GP class, overheating his Honda 125 after 4 laps of the sprint, settling with a DNF.

Overall, the weekend was a success considering the goals set by the boys going into the race. They were able to make some progress and get some more seat time on the bikes as they prepare for a long season! Check back for updates and be sure to visit the sponsor pages!
